How to Apply for the Warm Home Discount in 2026

Every year, millions of pounds in Warm Home Discount entitlement goes unclaimed — not because people do not qualify, but because they did not apply in time or did not know the process. Here is everything you need to know to claim your £150 in the 2026-27 scheme.

The Core Group: Automatic Payments

If you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, you do not need to do anything. The government automatically matches DWP records with energy supplier data, and the £150 rebate is applied directly to your electricity bill between October and March. Your supplier will write to confirm it has been applied. If you have Pension Credit Guarantee and do not receive that letter by January 2027, call your supplier immediately.

The Broader Group: Apply Yourself

If you receive certain other means-tested benefits and have high energy costs or live in a vulnerable household, you may qualify for the broader group. You will need to apply directly with your supplier. Qualifying benefits include Universal Credit, income-related ESA, income-based JSA, Income Support, Housing Benefit, and Child or Working Tax Credit with a low household income. Your supplier must participate in the scheme — check the government’s list at gov.uk before applying.

When to Apply

The scheme runs October to March. Suppliers typically open applications in October and funding runs out — sometimes before Christmas. The rule is simple: apply in the first week of October. Set a reminder now. Have your National Insurance number, benefit reference number, and energy account details ready. The application takes under 10 minutes online.

If Your Supplier Is Not on the Scheme

Not all suppliers participate. Smaller suppliers often opt out. If yours does not, you have two options: apply to another supplier’s scheme if you are eligible to switch, or contact Citizens Advice who can advise on alternative local support. Switching to a participating supplier could be worth doing even if the tariff is slightly less competitive — £150 back is significant.

Other Support Worth Claiming Alongside WHD

  • Cold Weather Payments: £25 automatic for each week temperatures drop below 0°C
  • ECO4 grants: Free insulation, boilers, and heat pumps for eligible households
  • Household Support Fund: Council-administered grants for energy and essentials
